When the pandemic hit, we saw every event on our catering books cancel. We laid off over 300 employees. We knew that these people were going home to families they needed to feed. That was just a snapshot of what was happening exponentially across our city of San Francisco, as well as the whole country. We had to do something. Within a few days, we partnered with Meals on Wheels SF for their 501c3, reopened our 19,000 sq ft facility, rehired some staff, and began producing and delivering 1000 high quality family meals to communities in need in the Bay Area per day. We went to work fundraising (corporate and social), grant writing, and creating relationships with the communities with the highest level of food insecurity. Along this road, we learned about stigma, shame, food deserts, and lack of food preparation skills. On top of adapting health and safety protocol, new delivery systems, we also started a "Cooking on a Budget" video series with our Executive Chef. The journey continues as more people lose their jobs and need for food assistance increases.
